Make and Attach the Top Linings.
In this lesson we will make the top linings.
Make sure you have read this lesson all the way through before beginning the lesson. A word of advice is to practice on scrap.
| The lining for this guitar is a little more advanced. You may wish to use pre-kerfed linings. I use special forms for part of the process.
Start by thickness sanding a strip of Spanish cedar cut from a neck blank. The dimensions I used are 2.5mm thick x 18mm wide x 28" long. A second strip that is 7-8mm wide will be glued on to the wider strip once it is glued to the side. |
|
| The lining strips are bent in the Fox bender. The wide one is glued to the soundboard edge of each side. I use a backing strip on each side so the clamps do not scar the wood. The forms help keep everything in proper shape.
Once this is dry use a knife, scrapers and sandpaper to bevel the inner edge of the lining. |
|
| After beveling the edge of the wide lining strip glue the second 7-8mm wide strip so it is flush to the top edge. I should mention that the strips have been cut to a length that stops at the point of the tail and heel blocks. You can always cut this part out afterwards. | |
| The sides are now ready to be fitted to the top. |
