Install the sides.
In this lesson we will notch the linings to accept the brace ends and attach the sides to the top.
Make sure you have read this lesson all the way through before beginning the lesson. A word of advice is to practice on scrap.
| Cut the lining so that it meets flush to the heel block. | |
| Mark the linings where the braces meet the linings and remove the wood with a sharp chisel. | |
| With a saw and chisel romove the excess brace material by first subtracting the thickness of the side from the plantilla outline. | |
| Check the fit of your sides. Once the fit is perfect you can cut the tail end of the side to the centerline of the tail block. Use your solera blocks to hold the sides in the proper place.
Repeat the process for the other side. The tail block section of the side should be the last thing you fit. |
|
| Once everything fits it is time to glue the sides to the top. I attach one side at a time. Apply glue to the linings and the tail block. DO NOT glue the sides into the heel slot! Use a clamping caul on each side of the tail block. Wait until the next day to remove the clamps and repeat the process for the other half. | |
| This is what it should look like when you are finished. Once everything is dry you can remove the heel/tail block support. |
